Beachside Firefighters in Rescue Training

Picture
Cocoa Beach firefighters are conducting rescue training today and Friday thanks to a grant from the International Association of Firefighters.

The grant of more than $15,000 provides two days of classes on rescues in confined spaces. Participants will learn about safety standards, their own health, ventilation techniques, patient care, retrieval systems and specialized trench rescue procedures.

The class is a total 40 hours. It is being held today at an abandoned concrete silo behind Cape Canaveral Fire Station 52 and Friday at Cocoa Beach Public Works. Firefighters and public works crews from Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral are participating in the training.

CBFD Train for High-Rise Rescues

Picture
COCOA BEACH -- Firefighters spent the day Thursday training to save anyone stuck in a high-rise.  Salt water has taken its toll across the city on several beachside condominiums.  Construction crews were working on several balconies and railings where they’ve seen significant deterioration because of salt water.  The Cocoa Beach Fire Department wants to be prepared if a worker gets trapped or stuck on the scaffolding.

This week, firefighters repelled down the side of a condo as part of a training exercise to make sure they’re ready if anyone gets stuck high above.  The exercise, called “a pick-off,” had the rescuer descend down the side of the building and attach the victim to the rescuer.

Friends Honor Cocoa Deputy Fire Chief

Corby suffered a heart attack and died last week after more than 21 years of service to the city, including acting as interim chief of the Cocoa Fire
Department for a time. He was 51.

A long line of fire trucks — including a vintage rig that carried Corby’s casket — and other fire and police vehicles from agencies around Brevard and Central Florida arrived at the Melbourne church after a 15-mile procession from Cocoa.

The funeral procession passed under a flag hanging between two ladder trucks on U.S. 1 at Parkway Drive, a traditional feature at funerals for police or firefighters.

Corby is survived by his wife, former Melbourne City Council member Joanne Corby, and three sons, Dustin, 24, Derek, 22, and David, 16.

“Brevard County has provided such an unbelievable level of support from day one. From county officials to lifeguards to fire rescue personnel, every single person we approached jumped at the opportunity to support the life-changing work that we do,” Surfers for Autism president Don Ryan said in a release. “Once these athletes hit the water, there is no differentiating one child from the next in terms of abilities and stereotypes begin to shatter.”  The Cocoa Beach Professional Firefighters also has chipped in their services, allowing kids to “decorate” one of their fire engines.

Boat Fire - September 2009:
Fire at Sunset Grill- "Major Issues"

Picture
A 40-foot boat caught fire Thursday near Cocoa Beach Causeway.  The vessel, named "Major Issues" erupted into flames outside the Sunset Waterfront Grill located at 500 West Cocoa Beach Causeway on the Banana River in Cocoa Beach.

The flames did not spread because the fire quickly burned through the lines that were securing the boat to the dock, so it drifted out into the Banana River.  Initially, the Coast Guard received the call, but they do not fight fires. The Fire Department does not have a boat, so firefighters used a ladder truck to shoot water at the boat, but it was fully engulfed.

No one was injured, but they really have Major Issues...
